River Soar
Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge Design
— Crossing to Compliment the Leicester Space Centre —
Site Location & Dynamics.
Design Drivers.
> The design of the bridge proposes no single iconic element such as a mast or arch that would dominate the site, but rather a light elegant design that respects the retained brick water tower. The elevation is made up of repeating elements, all of exactly the same length that twist gradually to form a sine wave profile for the bridge. Each element on the outer balustrade gives the effect of a changing magnetic field. The pier structure helps to relieve load at the West Abutment, reducing the required foundation, and thus reducing the impact on the existing tree roots.
